Nigeria: Rights Group to sue Federal Government over social media surveillance

Digital rights group, the Paradigm Initiative (PI), has vowed to challenge the Nigerian Government’s attempt to curtail free speech in the social media in a law court. This is contained in a statement made available to journalists, PI condemned the recent order issued by the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan Ali, to security agencies to “tackle the propagation of hate speeches via the social media, particularly by some prominent Nigerians.”

Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control​ calls for proper environmental sanitation and personal hygiene

The Center for Disease Control (CDC), in Nigeria has called for Improved good personal hygiene and proper environmental sanitation. This followed the death of sixteen people including medical doctors who lost their lives in the recent outbreak of Lassa fever in parts of the country. This is contained in a statement on the outbreak of the disease which states, “since the beginning of 2018, a total number of 107 suspected Lassa fever cases have been recorded in ten States. The states are Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Kogi, Imo and Lagos States. As at 21st January, 2018, the total number of confirmed cases is 61 with 16 deaths recorded.”

West Africa’s largest cattle breeding project to be launched in Sokoto

Sokoto State Government, in northern Nigeria has announced plans to inaugurate the Sokoto State Cattle Breeding Project, the largest in West Africa in May this year. Sokoto State Commissioner for Animal Health and Fisheries Development, Alhaji Tukur Alkali, made this known during a tour of the project site. Alhaji Alkali said the project would improve the genetics of local cattle breeds by ensuring more milk and beef production, and equip livestock farmers with modern production techniques. He said the project would go a long way in addressing the incessant farmers-herdsmen clashes in parts of Nigeria and some neighbouring West African countries.

Federal Government to establish colonies for cattle rearing

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to set up colonies across the country to assist Fulani herdsmen in rearing their cows. This is in its effort to find a lasting solution to incessant farmers/herders clashes. The decision to establish colonies across the country was taken at a special security meeting with Governors of five dates of the Federation considered as epicentres of the farmers-herdsmen clashes and security chiefs in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Nigeria’s agric sector employs six million in 2 years

Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, says that agriculture sector created six million jobs in the last two years. Chief Ogbeh said this while analysing the achievements of his ministry and the 2018 targets of the administration at a strategy retreat in Abuja, Nigeria's capital. He made the point while reacting to reports that over four million jobs had been lost in over two years of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government. The minister explained that the six million jobs were created both on and off farms because of the huge increase in local rice production. According to Chief Ogbeh, Nigeria’s agriculture is heavily manual and to be able to reduce rice importation by 95 per cent, at least six million extra jobs have happened in the farm.
