Nigeria announces ban of importation and production of syrup with codeine

Nigeria has announced a ban on the production and importation of cough syrups containing codeine with immediate effect. This followed investigation into its role in an addiction epidemic. The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewale made the announcement in Abuja the nation's Federal Capital Territory. Professor Adewale said that the directive became necessary due to the gross abuse Codeine usage has been subjected to in the country. In its stead, the Minister said Codeine containing cough syrups should be replaced with dextromethorphan which is less addictive. He said that the federal government had also banned sales of codeine containing cough syrup without prescription across the country.

FAO says poor farming techniques threatens Africa’s food security

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation (FAO) warns that lack of modern farming techniques threatens Africa’s food security.FAO representative Mr. Josef Kienzle handed down the warning at the second conservation agriculture conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The FAO Leader of the Mechanisation task team, expressed concern that until the government adopted modern technologies of farming, the continent would continue to depend on food aid.He said, there was need for a paradigm shift on intensive crop production since the current methods applied could not meet the challenges of the new millennium.

Nigerian yam farmers call for repeal of Export Prohibition Act

The Acting President of the Association of Yam Farmers, Processors and Marketers in Nigeria, Prof. Simon Irtwange has implored the federal government and the National Assembly to boost yam exports, by accelerating the repeal of the Export Prohibition Act of 1989. Professor Irtwange who made the call while speaking at a forum agriculture stakeholders in Abuja, emphasised that the Act which has continued to thwart the commitments of yam exporters from steering their business freely and putting out their yam export figures, also accounts for the drawbacks recorded in the diversification efforts and policies of the federal government.

PTCIJ to launch tools to follow-up Constituency and Capital Projects & a national fact-checking platform in Nigeria

Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) has announced plans to launch a tool entitled “UDEME”, it is leading-edge initiative that focuses on Nigeria’s public procurement and budget implementation practices.  This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by its Programme Director, Mr. Femi.
