Africa: COMESA monetary institute born

By Nawa Mutumweno, Reporting for Shout-Africa.com – The long-awaited COMESA Monetary Institute (CMI) meant to fast-track the realization of the regional economic bloc’s Monetary Co-operation Programme has commenced operations in March 2011. According to the latest COMESA e-newsletter, the monetary cooperation programme’s ultimate aim is to create the COMESA Monetary Union in the year 2018. Sudan: Tens of thousands displaced following days of fighting in the Abyei area

Abyei, 4 March 2011- Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is currently responding to the consequences of fighting in various locations north of the disputed border district of Abyei, in Sudan. The latest outbreak of violence began on 27th February, some 20 kilometres north of Abyei town. Since yesterday, tens of thousands of people have fled the town, leaving it mostly empty. MSF’s priority is to be able to reach and treat all patients. Southern Sudan minister shot dead

The incident comes only days after referendum results confirmed that the region will become would become the world’s newest independent state on 9 July. South Sudan forms Africa’ s newest Nation

By Nangayi Guyson – Southern Sudan who voted overwhelmingly with nearly 99% for independence have finally formed a new African nation, election officials confirmed on Monday. Southern Sudan Referendum Commission announced in Khartoum that 98.83% of the voters had backed independence confirming the spilt of Africa’s biggest country. Referendum Commission head Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil said.”Those who voted for unity were 44,888, that is, 1.17%. Sudan: Fighting erupts in southern Sudan, 30 soldiers killed

By Nangayi Guyson – Juba- “More the  30 soldiers have been killed in southern Sudan after two days of clashes among former pro-Khartoum fighters in the Upper Nile state against giving up their heavy weapons” , state officials said. The fighting around Malakal airport, close to the border with the north, began on Thursday when loyalists of Gabriel Tang, who commanded a pro-Khartoum force during the 1983 to 2005 civil war, objected to surrendering their heavy weaponry.
