Rwanda urges refugees to return home

By Nangayi Guyson – BLANTYRE, Malawi (AFP) – Rwanda’s refugees minister General Marcel Gatsinzi has called on some 2,000 refugees in Malawi to come home, saying the country had returned to peace and stability, local media said on Sunday. Malawi’s Sunday Times quoted Rwanda’s refugees minister saying.”Please return home. There is peace in Rwanda, there is security in Rwanda.” Gatsinzi told the refugees not to fear “wrong information” telling them they would be prosecuted for genocide if they returned home. Malawi former president medical assessment in limbo

Muluzi has since sought a court intervention so that the government’s decision is reviewed. Malawi: Malawian journalist arrested on mistaken identity

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Police in Malawi have disclosed that a reporter they arrested on allegations of causing breach of peace to a Member of Parliament (MP) family was a case of mistaken identity. The reporter Kandani Ngwira who writes for a newspaper the government tried to ban recently was arrested on Monday and was due to appear in court on Wednesday to be formally cleared of the charge. Malawi President Fires Defence Minister

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika on Monday (January 10, 2011) sacked his defence minister with immediate effect and took over his portfolio. A short statement read on the national radio, Malawi Broadcasting Station, said Reckford Thotho was “fired with immediate effect” and Mutharika had assumed the defence portfolio. The letter from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) however did not give reason why the Minister has been fired. Malawi’s power sector gets $350.7 boost from US Millennium Challenge Corporation

The MCC is a partnership between the United States and developing countries that awards large-scale grants to fund country-led solutions for reducing poverty through sustainable economic growth.
