Sierra Leone: President Koroma, Ministers and Diplomats attend 1st Presidential workshop on Global Fund Grants in Sierra Leone

By Bai-Bai Sesay – President Ernest Bai Koroma, cabinet Ministers, diplomats and representatives of the international community recently held a one day 1st presidential workshop on Global Fund grants in Sierra Leone organized by the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund Sierra Leone (CCMSL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation with support from the German BACKUP Initiative (GTZ) at the Njala Venue, Lumley Beach Road Freetown.

In his keynote address, President Koroma told participants that Global Fund started in 2003 with two million dollars to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in the country.

He pointed out that the amount has now increased to 41 million dollars noting that more money is needed to fight the pandemic and called on the National AIDS Secretariat (NAS) to redouble their efforts in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

He lauded Global Fund for their continuous support and expressed thanks and appreciation for also supporting the free health care in the country.

The President assured the funding agencies and the international community for his government commitment and full support for the prevention of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in the country.

Director of the National AIDS Secretariat, Dr Brima Kargbo spoke on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and how they have reduced the spread of the virus noting that the percentage still remains at 1.5% in the country.

Out-going Chairman of CCMSL, Dominic Lamin told the participants that the objective of the workshop is to improve on communication strategy within and out of CCMSL Constituencies for efficient and effective Global Fund grants implementation in Sierra Leone

He also said that the workshop is designed to increase the understanding and participation of His Excellency, the President, Vice President, Cabinet and Deputy Ministers, Public Servants of line Ministries and Civil Society Organization in the Global Fund Grants implementation in Sierra Leone.
