LIBERIA: As Government recruits for Clean-up Campaign…WASH Commission Declares July as Clean Up Month

By: WASH R&E “Media” Network – Over 300 youths have been recruited as part of government’s efforts under the Youth Employment Program to keep Monrovia, Paynesville and other places clean.

The clean-up exercise is expected to get underway this Thursday in Monrovia.

According to Youth and Sports Minister, Zoegar Wilson, the recruits will carry out a regular cleaning-up campaign in the collection of wastes or garbage management of Monrovia and its environs.

Minister Wilson indicated that the program is a continuation of cleaning the beaches and waterways, carried out by the Liberia Maritime Authority.

He said the project has been transferred to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

“Recruits will be deployed at various streets and other places in Monrovia, Paynesville, Gardnerville and elsewhere for wastes or garbage collections,” Minister Wilson noted.

He asserted that the program is intended for disadvantaged youths and that government is expected to provide materials like hand gloves, headgears, rain boots, and nose-protectors among others.

He said the Ministry will need the assistance of the Mayors of Paynesville and Monrovia to implement the project.

Minister Wilson also said the program will not only focus on Montserrado County, but will roll out to other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Commission has declared the Month of July as Clean up Liberia Month.

The month, according to the Commission is to clean Monrovia and environs as Liberians prepare to celebrate its 172ndIndependence Day.
