Zimbabwe: Huawei launches ICT competition

By Admire Machiwenyika – Huawei Zimbabwe have launched the first session 2019 – 2020 ICT completion that will allow University students across the country taking part in the contest and they are expecting more 200 students.

Huawei Zimbabwe managing director Mr Jason Shao revealed that students will be participating in a contest with subjects that include network, Cloud Computing, artificial intelligence and big data.

“As we all know students are the primary source of talent. This year we are expecting over 200 students from universities across Zimbabwe to participate in the contest with subjects including network, Cloud computing, artificial intelligence and big data,” he said.

Shao added that they have decided to release the Huawei ICT Academy program for the first time in Zimbabwe this year.

“To help students quickly align with industry requirement by mastering the latest ICT technologies while they are still on campus, we have also decided to release the Huawei ICT Academy program as the first time in Zimbabwe this year.

“We establish ICT academies in collaboration with global higher education institutions, to develop innovate and application-oriented technical ICT talent for diverse industries,” he added.

Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Courier Services Hon Dr Jenfran Muswere commented the initiative aimed at encouraging participation in ICT practice and nurturing Zimbabwe’s ICT talent and skills.

“I am aware that this the first time this event is being held in Zimbabwe. This year’s event, I am told, is expected to involve over 28,000 participants from over 14 African countries and is being organized under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future”.

“The event brings together young ICT Students from several African countries to compete for a place and scholarship at one of China’s top Technology Universities”.

 “ICT Competition is trying to establish a complete global ICT training and certification system through the means of encouraging the students to attend and being awarded. It is, therefore, my sincere belief that the Huawei Zimbabwe ICT Competition Program will serve as an effective platform for corporate leaders and human resources professionals to share insights, knowledge and tools about ICT talent development and management in Zimbabwe,” he said.

At the same event, six universities signed Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with Huawei Zimbabwe that will benefit students from this initiative.
