Liberia: Tomorrow is By-Election Day in Electoral District 11 Montserrado County

(NEC/ July 2, 2012/ Monrovia); The National Elections Commission (NEC) will on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 conduct a Representative By-Election in Electoral District #11  Montserrado County.

The By-Election is intended to fill a vacancy created by the death of Representative Moses Saah Tandanpolie on March 16, 2012.

 Article 37 of the 1986 constitution of the Republic of Liberia provides for the holding of a by-election in the event of a vacancy in the legislature cause by death, resignation, expulsion or otherwise.

According to a NEC release, logistical preparations for the By-Election are being finalized; the deployment of polling materials and personnel to polling centers starts late has begun and will end early in the morning on July 3, in time for the election.

The polls will open at 8 A.M. and close by 6 PM.

The 33,811 registered voters in the district are expected to go to the polls.

According to statistical details relative to the conduct of the BY-Election released by NEC, there are eleven candidates in the race for the vacant seat. Four of the candidates represent Political parties (Unity Party, National Patriotic Party, Liberty Party and the Congress for Democratic Change) while Seven are Independent Candidates.

 29 International Observers and 236 Local Observers have been accredited to observe the By-Election with about 410 polling staff hired to man the 78 Voting centers and 20 voting Precincts spread across the district.

The NEC release further revealed that about 70 officers of the Liberia National Police will be deployed across the District on Election Day to provide security to the process.

Political campaign for the By-Election ended as of 12:00 Mid Night last night. Civic and Voters Education for the By-Election activities are being concluded today.

The retrieval of polling materials will begin immediately following the counting of votes at the various polling centers on July 3. The payment of polling staff will commence on July 4, 2012 at designated sites in the district.

Meanwhile, a press conference for the announcement of the official results of the Montserrado District # 11 By-Election will be held by the NEC on Friday, July 6, 2012.
