The Amazing Place, Gauteng Celeb Race

By Novell Zwange  – Celebs race to the finish as eight people, four teams brace it up in 48 hours for one incredible province, the amazing Gauteng.

It’s all coming together with a unique tourism race against the clock that will put Gauteng on the tourism map all over again and is being filmed for a heart-stopping reality television show.

Titled Amazing Place Gauteng, the race began today (September 28th) at Constitution Hill when eight celebs formed into groups of four and headed out for a two-day adventure that sees clues planted in six of Gauteng’s top tourist destinations.

“We are justifiably proud of the work done by the Gauteng Tourism Authority and indeed the whole province in turning Gauteng into a real destination during the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” explains Gauteng Provincial Government Premier, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane.

“Now we are stepping up the action with this unique ‘race’ that highlights Gauteng’s tourism routes both to outsiders and residents within the province.”

The teams are made up of provincial executives teamed with singers; recording artists,  beauty models, and radio broadcaster from Kaya FM.

The aim of each of these four teams is to transverse Gauteng, experiencing some of the best tourism offerings whilst searching for the clues that will see them crowned winner of Amazing Place Gauteng when the race winds up tomorrow (September 29th).

Gauteng Provincial Government Premier Mokonyane fittingly saw the teams off to a poignant start this morning when she led them through the Women’s Jail at Constitution Hill to locate their first clue.

After that, it was into a Chevrolet Captiva, headed to the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary in Germiston, Ekurhuleni where the teams had to search for more clues in this 94-hectare marshland area that’s home to 150 bird species.

The last stretch of Day One of Amazing Place Gauteng sees the teams call in at the Vaalnest Boutique Hotel where all four teams will be treated to the kind of top-end tourism experience that makes the Vaal such a popular destination in the province!

With an overnight stop at the Maropeng Hotel in the Cradle of Humankind, Day Two starts with a flight in a hot air balloon that will see the teams exploring the Cradle of Humankind from above – after which the four teams again don their racing and thinking caps as they explore the “amazing place” that is Gauteng!

Amazing Place Gauteng is an initiative of the Gauteng Tourism Authority. It is supported by Chevrolet Captiva and Kaya FM. The television series will be broadcast on DSTV bouquet channels (Mzansi Magic, Africa Magic and Africa Magic Plus) and SABC early November. The series is presented by Kaya FM’s Bob Mabena.
