Ghana: Six Naval aircrafts for Ghana?

By Peterking Quaye,Accra,Ghana – The government of Ghana is to secure six additional naval aircraft for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) by the end of next year.In addition, it will repair the existing four naval aircraft and also provide the GAF with adequate logistics.
The Vice president, Mr. John Dramani Mahana, who announced this yesterday, said the move was to support the GAF to protect the nation’s sovereignty in the face of oil find and the political crisis in neighbouring Cote d’lvoire.
Mr. Mahama, who is the Chairman of Armed Force Council, commended the GAF for their achievements in peace-keeping which had boosted the country’s image, saying, Government is satisfied and proud of their achievements in International peace-keeping operations and it has given a positive image to the country.
Speaking at the West African Security Service Association (WASSA) celebration of the Ghana Armed Force event at the Burma Camp in Accra. Prizes were given to retired army officers and civilian employees, as well as winners of the Chief of Defence Staff’s Essay Competition.
He also lauded the GAF for liaising with the police to embark on night patrols, which had led to the reduction of armed robbery in the country. Besides, he said the military’s presence in Bawku had helped restore peace in that area. There has been overall improvement in the performance of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Present were the Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Joseph Henry Smith, the National security Advisor Brigadier Nunoo Menseh , Chief of the Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Peter Blay, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye , serving and retired army commanders and civilians employees.
They guarantee us stable environment which is conducive for development, he said, attracting thunderous applause from the military officers.
Mr. Mahama condemned the isolated skirmishes between the military and the police and stressed the need for the two institutions to maintain good relations, since they were both in the service. He again asked the military to promote cordial relation with the civilian population.
On the Single Spine Salary Policy, Mr. Mahama said the government was working to correct the imbalance in the implementation. Touching on the national housing project he assured that the accommodation situation of all security agencies, including the military would be improved.
