Malawi religious leaders say government has lost direction

By Emmanuel Muwamba – The Public Affairs Committee (PAC), a grouping of religious leaders in Malawi, has criticised the administration of President Bingu wa Mutharika saying the government has lost direction for ordering to deport a British envoy. On Wednesday, PAC condemned the government intention to expel the British High Commissioner Fergus Cochrane-Dyet. Government has refused to comment on the issue. Malawi: UK cautions Malawi on deportation of High Commissioner

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Britain on Tuesday issued a stern warning to Malawi warning that expelling its High Commissioner Fergus Cochrane-Dyte is unacceptable and has consequences. The warning follows the summoning of the High Commissioner by the Malawi Government on Monday over a leaked telegram from the British High Commission in Lilongwe which among others labelled President Bingu wa Mutharika as dictator. The Malawi Government in a swift reaction gave the High Commissioner 72 hours deportation order on Monday afternoon. Malawi expels British diplomat over leaked cable

By Emmanuel Muwamba – The Malawi Government on Monday deported the British High Commissioner, Fergus Cochrane-Dyet, following an article published on Saturday (April 16) quoting leaked diplomatic telegram. Cochrane-Dyet was given 72 hours on Monday to leave the country. The British High Commission press and political affairs office told the press that Cochrane-Dyet was summoned by Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Etta Banda over the article. Malawi: Government fires University of Malawi dons over academic freedom fight

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Council for the University of Malawi has fired three lecturers at Chancellor College, the main constituent college of University of Malawi who defied its directive to return to class. The lecturers have been fighting for academic freedom following the summoning of their colleague by police boss, Peter Mukhito, over an example he gave in class when he likened the uprising in Egypt and Tunisia to the scarcity of fuel in Malawi. Africa: COMESA monetary institute born
