Liberia’s Female National Team Arrives in Ivory Coast for Female WAFU Tournament

By Peterking Quaye, in Ivory Coast – Liberia’s Lone Star female national team arrived in the Ivorian Capital of Abidjan to participate in the maiden edition of the Female WAFU Tournament 2012. The championship, which has seen several deferrals in the past but it is geared towards the development of women’s football in the zone.

The tournament scheduled for 28 September to 7 October in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire will now have five participants battling for honours. The West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone ‘B’ Women’s Championships scheduled is for 29 September to 7 October in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

The morale in camp ahead of the tournament is very high, as they Coach Kelvin Sebgwe girls are determined to make the nation proud.

In a related development, Benin has withdrawn from the West African Zonal Union (WAFU) Zone “B” Tournament forcing organizers to alter the fixtures.

Information gathered by Liberiaentertainment.com/sports in Ivory Coast from the secretariat of the Zonal Union indicates that the Beninois confirmed their withdrawal on Tuesday in a letter to the organisers.

This leaves Group B with Ghana and Senegal as the teams and will face each other twice on September 29 and October 1 both at the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan.

Hosts Cote d’Ivoire are housed in Group A alongside Liberia and Mali.

According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the invited players are to report at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The team will train under the technical direction of head coach, James Kuuku Dadzie.

The Queens, which failed to qualify for 2012 African Women’s Championship scheduled for Equatorial Guinea later in the year, will be hoping to make amends at the zonal championship.

Ghana are housed in Group B alongside Benin and Senegal whilst hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia and Mali make up Group A.
