Liberia: ECOWAS envoy to visit NEC soon

(NEC/Monrovia/ September 14, 2011) Two Special Envoys of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are expected in the country shortly as guests of the National Elections Commission (NEC).

The   ECOWAS   eonvoys, comprising   former presidents Abu Bakar of Nigeria and John Agyekun Kuffour of Ghana are expected to hold dialogues with key stakeholders for the holding of credible and peaceful elections in Liberia.

The ECOWAS Commission President, Ambassador Victor Gbeho, made the disclosure on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 when he held a high level meeting with officials of the National Elections Commission at the NEC headquarters in Monrovia.

 Ambassador Gbeho said that ECOWAS would send 150 persons on observation mission of the pending elections. He re-affirmed ECOWAS’ continuous supports to NEC for   the holding of free, fair and credible presidential and Legislative elections in Liberia.

The   NEC   Chairman, James Fromayan, who earlier welcomed the ECOWAS’ delegation and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support ECOWAS is rendering toward the restoration of peace and stability in Liberia.

Mr. Fromayan recounted the sacrificial role ECOWAS played through the intervention of ECOMOG   as well as its quick intervention in 2003 when anarchy loomed over the country prior to the coming of United Nations Mission.

The NEC Chair reassured ECOWAS of NEC’s commitment to conducting credible elections and express gratitude to ECOWAS’ president for the current supports in the lead up to the 2011 electoral process.

He however indicated that the NEC might face a few challenges along the way, but noted that with the cooperation and tolerance of political parties and the Liberian populace, the Presidential and Legislative elections will be successful.
