Girl Child Network and Tare

On the 17th June 2013, I joined Betty Makoni and Girl Child Network in a special viewing organised by Deloitte. The documentary to be aired later that evening on Channel 5’s extraordinary people, was the heart wrenching story of perseverance and courage. Tare, the young Zimbabwean girl who at 13 had a toothache that did not go away but later became a life threatening tumour. The aggressive tumour took over, closing her air waves and severely disfiguring her face.  Unfortunately medical facilities in Zimbabwe were unaffordable and also the unusual nature of the tumor did not help matters. There was no help for Tare. Her mother Thandiwe spent over three years trying to find someone who could help her daughter. Through Betty Makoni, Girl Child Network helped raise the awareness of Tare’s condition. Saving Faces and Girl Child Network are the two organisations that made it possible for her to have the operation and care she needed in the UK. Under the expertise of Professor Iain Hutchison, a UK surgeon Tare has had two major operations and continues to receive treatment to stop the tumour from growing. Despite excruciating pain and setbacks. Tare remains courageous and hopes for the best. She wants to become a doctor herself one day . She doesn’t give up and she remains a pleasant young girl.

Tare is alive because of human kindness and persistence. The very best of human virtue from the tireless devotion of her mother Thandiwe to the donations which continue to pour in. These two Charities are doing great work and yet more needs to be done; and not just for Tare but for many others too. Saving Faces funds much needed medical research on facial diseases, injuries and disfigurement. Girl Child Network empowers girls across Africa. Betty Makoni’s efforts have transformed the lives of many girls in Zimbabwe and across Africa. Vulnerable girls, whether its rape, domestic abuse or unusual tumours Girl ChildNetwork is there to help. Please support Girl Child Network Worldwide and help Tare fulfill her dreams and have the best life possible.
