Malawi: The Superwoman Festival 2010 in Lilongwe

With the support of the German Embassy Lilongwe and its partnership with Cream!Women in the Arts, the first-ever Superwoman Festival is taking place in Lilongwe on November 25 and 26.

The Superwoman Festival is being organized by Cream! Women in the Arts, an organization of female Malawian artists with the goal to promote the cultural and artistic capacity of Malawian women. The organisation, launched in March 2010, unites female artists from varying fields of the arts and holds interactive capacity building events intended to lead to women’s socio-economic empowerment.

Cream! supports women artists by dispelling biased and negative perceptions  of women in the performing arts. The organisation also serves to give voice to women who often are unheard or neglected in their professional artistic field.

Cream! will hold the Superwoman Festival in Lilongwe, during which there will be performances in the fields of theatre, spoken word, visual art, music concerts, acoustic music, contemporary and traditional dance and fashion.

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Malawi sponsored The Superwoman Festival 2010 by contributing 3,000 Euro to the event.  German Ambassador to Malawi Mr. Rainer Müller handed over the check to the organisers of The Superwoman Festival in early November. With this sponsorship, a new and exciting partnership was forged between the German Embassy and Cream! Women in the Arts. To mark this, an agreement was signed between Mr. Rainer and the chairperson of CREAM! Women in the Arts, Mrs. Zilanie Gondwe.
