Ghana: Jubilee First Oil Naltional Essay Competition

By Peterking Quaye – The first edition of the National Essay Competition has been launch in Accra, dubbed the Jubilee First Oil National Essay Competition with the call on all students across the country to participate in this innovative competition.

Mrs. Mary Quaye Director Preeducation at Ministry of Education GhanaThe Competition is open to two categories of students junior comprising of students from junior and senior high students and senior categories as to tertiary students, with mouth-watering prizes available for the top 3 categories winner and prizes form the competition winner are: educational grant /scholarship, cash prizes, Laptops and jubilee oil souvenirs’.

Mrs .Mary Quaye, Director of Pre-tertiary education at the Ministry of Education was of the view that event has come at time that the youth voice needs to be heard in the oil find. She further commended the Jubilee Partners for their exemplary initiative that hallmarks the acceptance of responsibility towards the future generation “it is about time our youth are passed the mouth piece to contribute to issues of our society.” You have set the standard today and hope that other will follow she added.

Speaking at the event , According to the her, competition categories should be revisit the student as a junior as to separated the JHS from the SHS as this may not order well for the students .She lauded the initiative by the oil partners –Anadarko ,E.O Groups Ghana Ltd, GNPC ,KOSMOS Energy ,SABRE Oil and Gas and  TULLOW Oil .

The competition starts opened on Friday 12th November and closes midnight on November 30th, 2010, all entry is expected to be mail or posted to the committee in charge at email:

Topics for the competition are for:  Junior category: TO WHAT USE SHOULD GHANA PUT ITS OIL WEALTH (Opens to Junior High and Senior High Schools students) and senior category: GHANA’S OIL IS FOR DEVELOPMENT.OUTLINE SOME DEVELOPMENT BENEFITS OF GHANA’S OIL FIND? (Open to students from tertiary institutions across the country)

The competition is part of activities lined up by the Jubilee Partners to launch Ghana’s Jubilee First Oil. The competition is primarily geared towards creating awareness among the youth about Ghana’s Oil sector. To participant must be a residing Ghanaian and a student in any academic institution.

The essay must be submitted in English language and with the applicant’s Name, Age, School, Email Address and Telephone number.

It is clear that this initiative will help to harness ideas from the youth on how to manage the sector for the good of the nation as they are the future generation of the country, like many country, oil find has become a curse instead of blessing, with their youth suffering and stirring poverty in the face with nothing to hold onto.

Ghana’s oil partners decision to use this competition to solicit the views of the youth and also award them is definitely a laudable initiative and it many hope that will be  sustain for the as long as oil is drilled from the country .

To ensure fairness of the competition ,a top and seasoned academicians from diverse background have been selected to chair the affairs of this competition and they are :Hon Fritz Baffour ,member of parliament ,Kwaku Sakyi-Addo ,one time GJA Best Journalist of the Year,Dr. Audrey Gazekpo ,Hon. Elizabeth Ohene ,Mr. Mawuli Adjei .According to member of the panel of judges ,the judges will be looking for ideas present balance ,comprehensive and objective manner ,applicant’s communication of idea in a way that makes the issue relevant ,ability of the applicant to organised research and insight among other .Plagiarism will not be encourage .
