Dr Who actress Chipo Chung to host Zimbabwe Achievers Awards 2012

THE Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) has announced that actress, Chipo Chung will this year host its awards show on the 28th April.

Chipo will become the first official host of the Awards show – now in their second year – marking a shift from last year’s course that saw multiple personalities take command of various segments of the event.

Speaking from L.A, Chipo said:

“I’m thrilled to be a part of Zimbabwe’s biggest nights in London. It all promises to be great fun.”

“I attended the Zimbabwe Achievers’ Awards last year and was thrilled by the diversity of the community, both in the audience and those being honoured with nominations. Zimbabweans are some of the most talented people in the world, multi-cultural and forward-looking. It’s a great thing that we acknowledge and remember this,” the former Dr. Who and Sherlock star said.

Chipo was born as a refugee in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and is half-African and half-Chinese.

She spent her first two years in refugee camps in Mozambique with thousands of young people who were escaping the war in then-Rhodesia.

Chipo was raised in Harare and developed her acting with the renowned theatre company Over the Edge. At eighteen, she moved to the United States where her mother – Zimbabwe’s former minister of Education – Fay Chung, was working for the United Nations.

She studied at Yale University, graduating cum laude, before moving to the UK to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Since then she has starred in many TV, film and theatre projects.

Meanwhile the ZAA has opened voting for the public on its website. The awards categories cover a cross section of genres from Business, Sports, Entertainment and Media.
