1st GHANA MOVIE AWARDS -MORE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

By PETERKING QUAYE – The much anticipated 1st Ghana Movie Awards came off at the nation’s only international conference centre -Accra International Conference Centre ,on Christmas day admist huge and influential Nigerian actors presence .

The battle for supremacy could be seen from the two female supper heavy weights in the Ghanaian movie industry,  ‘iron-ladies’ film makers Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong-Manso battled it out to see who wins the most awards at the maiden edition of the Ghana Movie Awards. Despite their multiple nominations for their works ‘Sinking Sands’ & ‘I Sing of a Well’, and ‘Checkmate’ & ‘A Sting in A Tale’ respectively.

Shirley’s ‘Sting in A Tale’ stung the competition by winning a total of 5 nods including Best Directing, Best Original Music, Best Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Cinematography. Leila’s ‘Sinking Sands’ grabbed four statuettes including Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Wardrobe, Best Movie (West African Collaboration).

Majid Michel won Best Actor (English) with Kofi Adu alias Agya Koo winning Best Actor (Local Language), while Jackie Appiah (and her 3 co-stars) took the nod for Best Actress (English) with Rose Mensah Alias Kyeiwaa winning in the local language division.

The over-all best actor and actress will be announced at a separate ceremony later Sunday evening, December 26 at the Golden Tulip hotel. The winner would take home a brand new Zoyte SUV.

The Ghana Movie Awards saw musical performances from the likes of Rana, Mimi, Kwabena Kwabena, 4×4, SL, 5five, and Praye, with guest appearances from Segun Arinze, Uti Nwachuku, Samini, Tinny, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey, Kofi Bucknor and others.

Shout-Africa.com  sought the views of some of the spectators ,majority had issues with the recipients of certain awards. For instance , “why and how Kofi Adjorlolo and Yvonne Nelson were named   the Most Favorite Actor and Actress respectively”.

But the organizers say the award was based on voting and it was obvious that most movie lovers did not participate in the voting.O

Spectators also said the voting was not publicized enough.
